Turbidity is how clear or cloudy the water is. When you step on the bank of a river, the cloud of dirt you see is Turbidity. Turbidity is normally caused by dirt floating in the water. It is caused by suspended solids , generally invisible Similar to smoke or air.Turbidty is measured in units called NTUs. People also can measure turbidity by filtering a sample and comparing colors. Measurement is the “key” to water quality. Suspended solids affect water disinfection with chlorine. This is because the particals act like shields for virus and bacteria. Suspended solids can protect bacteria from sterilization of water. “Fluids can contain suspended solid matter consisting of partials of many different sizes.” Not only do humans not like the look of turbid water, it is the heavy mettles that are killing the fish.
