The D.O. level can effect how fish live. D.O. is the oxygen fish breathe through the gills. If the level drops below 3.0 even very tolerant fish die. Oxygen gets into the water one way:
1.water moving very fast over waterfalls and rapids.
D.O. is what all aquatic animals breathe under the water.
D.O. is the short way to say dissolved oxygen. Fish will die if they don’t have D.O. it’s what fish breathe, in through the gills. D.O. is oxygen dissolved into the water.

When a body of water is polluted D.O. levels may drop from 9.0 to 5.0. If you pollute a river it can allow a river to burn.Three-fourths of the worlds air supply is produced by phytoplankton. Some bacteria can split oxygen molecules “o” from hydrogen molecules “H2”. You will find at rivers with lots of fish there will be little to no D.O. left.

When farmers over fertilize their fields the number and size of water plants increase a great deal. At 41 degrees ferinheight trout use 50 to 60 milligrams of D.O. and at 77 degrees ferinheight they need 5 to 6 times that amount.A large population of fish can use 4-5 ppm of D.O. Ppm is parts per million or 1 part in 1,000,000. In natural water resources 5-6 ppm of D.O. is required. If D.O. levels decrease it can cause bugs tolerant to die and tolerant bugs to appear. Many things such as elevation can affect D.O. levels. Fish that are used to low D.O. levels will die at 3.0 or less.

The process of plants absorbing the sun's rays of light and changing it toD.O. is photosynthesis. If a river get's lots of sunlight and has lots of plants of the riverbank there will probably be more D.O. during the day than at night. At night the plants use up D.O. and during the day they make D.O. through the process of photosynthisis. An electric meter uses electrodes to measure the pressure of oxygen in the water. The things that controll the D.O. are tempature, elevation, and maximum concentration.
