D.O.

The defiinition for D.O. is the concentration to oxyygen dissolved in water expressed in mg/l or as a percent. .D.O is a good indicator of a healthy ecosystem. It ranges from 0-18 ppm. To support a diverse stream ecosystem 5-6 ppm is a good amount. D.O enters the water from direct absorbtion from the atmospheer or from photosynthesis of plants. Plants and animals use the air for resperation and by aerobic bacteria often trhe aerobic consume oxygen during the decomposition process, if improperly treated waste water enters the water the growth of algee increases and the D.O levels decrease. This happens when the plant material dies off and is decomposed through aerobic bacteria. Fish breathe by absorbing D.O througfh there gills. There is more D.O.. when the water is cold so if your a fish you probly want to live some where were there the water is cold. If you have high amounts of D.O. your drinking water will taste better . Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sumlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis in plants generly involve the green pigement chlorophy and generates oxygen as a bye product. Mayfly, Nymphs, Stonefly, Cadisfly, Larva and beetle are species that can't tolerate D.O. When the D.O. levels decrease the pollution intolert organisms are replaced by the pollution tolerent worms and fly larvea. By plant photosynthesis oxygen enters the water resperation is used by plants and animals for oxygen.
A unit of concentration is usually used forg levels of pollution in air water body fluids and more. For example 1 ppm is 1 little part in 1,000,000. 1 mg/l is also equal to 1 ppm. To produce an ink of concentration of 1 ppm you can drop four drops of ink in a 55 gallon bowl of water. The same thing goes for 1 ppb which is parts per billion 1 ppb is equl to 1 part in a billion.
