About Chimacum Creek

J.,J.h.,K.

Chimacum Creek starts in the hills around Beaver Valley (The East Fork) And by Eagle mount road (Peterson and Delaney Lakes). Local rain feeds into the creek. In the 1800’s Chimacum Creek was a healthy creek and also had high levels of oxygen. When the dairy farmers came to Chimacum needed a better way to access the creek, so they channeled the creek into a straight line, by doing this and removing forests the stream ran to fast for young fry to survive, and by the 1960’s 90 of the salmon population was gone. Right now people at the North Olympic Salmon Collation (NOSC) are trying to plant trees to regain tree cover and try to make the creek not so straight. We are monitoring the creek so we can make sure chum salmon can come through.
