CHIMACUM ELEMENTARY TEST SCORES JUMP.
Lynch: “Results reflect the work of an outstanding team of teachers with a common vision.”
According to new data released by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC), the academic
achievement of Chimacum Elementary’s 4th and 5th graders has grown dramatically over the past 12
Chimacum Schools Superintendent Rick Thompson presented the new test results to the Chimacum School
Board of Directors on Wednesday evening. Thompson commented, “it is a pleasure to see the growth
Chimacum Elementary School students are making. Individual staff members and the school as a whole
are fully committed to each student’s growth.”
Those Chimacum 4th graders meeting or exceeding the Washington State SBAC standards in Math grew by
17%. One year ago, 54% percent passed the 3rd grade assessment. This year 63% of those students
passed the 4th grade math assessment, well ahead of the state average of 55%. In the Language Arts
assessment, the year- over-year growth was 28%. One year ago, 50% passed the 3rd grade assessment.
This year 64% passed, again, well ahead of the state average in Language Arts of 58%.
Chimacum Elementary 5th graders demonstrated significant year-over-year growth as well. Those
meeting or exceeding the state standard in Math increased 8%, from 50% as fourth graders a year ago
to 54% this year. The state average is 49%. In Language Arts, Chimacum’s 5th graders are also up
8% from 51% last year to 55% this year. The state average is now at 61%.
Chimacum Elementary Principal Jason Lynch suggests a number of educational enhancements are
beginning to pay off, “while this cohort data shows tangible incremental success, the improvement
likely results from the increased buy in of our students as they better understand the seriousness
of learning, in conjunction with our talented staff of teachers collaborating to personalize each
student’s educational path.”
