Link: August and September Capital Projects Photos
Greetings Chimacum Community:
In 2018 voters approved a six year, eight million dollar capital levy. This levy replaced the expiring 2012 capital levy. Since passage of the levy, using the District’s facility analysis as a guide, numerous projects have taken place to improve the look, safety, and functionality of both campuses in Chimacum Schools. Tax collections for capital projects come in twice a year. The projects below are constructed without bond debt.
Chimacum Creek Primary School
This P-2 campus adjacent to the Jefferson County library received new interior and exterior paint this summer. New restrooms are being created for Head Start and Preschool. The school has also received new technology, which is also purchased from the capital levy. This is the newest building in the school district and houses the youngest students. The school will also host a Ready for Kindergarten series this year. New Principal Kyle Ehlis is off to a great start. He can be reached at 302-5823. A new garden will be installed using a grant from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Chimacum Elementary School and Pi
This school has been relocated to the former middle school site, adjacent to the older elementary campus. Grade 6 has been added to grades 3-6, making this a 3-6 elementary model. Projects have included a major electrical upgrade and new technology. Classrooms and hallways have been painted and new carpeting installed. Better specialists offices (example is occupational therapist) have been created. The school will enjoy newly renovated student bathrooms. This fall a new library and commons, eating area will be created out of the former middle school commons. The school will also see improved outdoor storage and a new garden installed. The alternative program known as Pi has also been moved into newly renovated space at CES. Principal Jason Lynch can be reached at 302-5855.
Chimacum Junior/Senior High School
The former high school campus now includes grades 7 and 8. The commons has received new flooring and newly renovated bathrooms are being installed. The school has been painted on the inside and new classrooms have been created out of old, outdated spaces. Behind the school, adjacent to the large greenhouse, East Jefferson County Rotary has donated and is installing an outdoor pavilion for classroom use. Principal David Carthum can be reached at 302-5900.
I want to thank our facility committee for their dedication to solving facility challenges, our maintenance staff led by Henry Florschutz, our teachers and principals for working so cooperatively while classrooms were moved and new spaces created. The work is being done by General Contractor Hoch Construction from Port Angeles and the specifications are created by Studio Meng Strazzara from Seattle. The projects were competitively bid and began in July. This round of projects should be substantially complete this fall.
Please feel free to contact Rick if you would like a tour of the new spaces, or have questions about the projects or school finance in general.
