Gretchen Berg has been a teacher in Chimacum School District for 19 years. In those years she has primarily provided instruction in English Language Arts and Social Studies. Beginning Fall of 2019, she is changing things up and started teaching 6th grade English Language Arts and Social Studies. She is looking forward to experiencing Camp Cispus and learning about Mt. St. Helens, right along with her 6th grade students, providing that the COVID-19 pandemic will allow this fabulous trip for our students.
From 2006-2019 she has worked with 7th and 8th graders to create and publish the 6-8th grade middle school yearbook, The Talon. From 2002-2012, she worked with students to create a school newspaper, also called The Talon.
Since 2002, Ms. Berg has provided her students with Holocaust education, frequently culminating in student entries to the Holocaust Center for Humanity's annual writing and art contest. She is so proud that two of her students have represented Chimacum as winners of that contest.
For several years, Ms. Berg has had the opportunity to be the teacher advisor of the middle school WeAct Club and has had the opportunity to attend We Day twice. She was very excited to be a participant in the inaugural WeFeedKids 5k at Chimacum this past month and looks forward to being a part of the growth of the program.
Ms. Berg has provided students with the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. since 2010. The trip was open to all Chimacum students in grades 7-12 who had an interest in learning first-hand about the founding of this country's government. She hopes to travel again with students in Spring of 2021.
Additionally, Ms. Berg has collaborated with the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townsend since 2007 to provide all 7th grade students with an outdoor education program that focuses on the local maritime history and trades. Aside from amazing days spent on the water with 7th graders, she has enjoyed being able to share those experiences with the community via KPTZ, our local radio station. https://nwmaritime.org/programs/youth-programs/youth-school/
Ms. Berg hails originally from Newport Beach, California and moved here to the Pacific Northwest after high school graduation. She attended and graduated from Peninsula College and later from Central Washington University with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Reading. In the meantime, she helped her family open and run a bakery and several local restaurants. When not doing school-related activities, Ms. Berg can be found walking her dog, chilling with her cat, traveling across the the country or across the world, including recent travels to Denmark and Sweden!
