Dear Chimacum Families,
As you know, we are exploring opportunities to rethink our school calendar to make the most out of the 180 days that the state allocates for our students to attend school. There is evidence that modifying the school calendar to increase the number of and quality of breaks can improve student learning and enrichment, mitigate teacher burnout, and improve attendance. In cooperation with the Port Townsend School District, we are deploying a Washington State grant that pays for this study, including staff time and consultant time.
On Tuesday about ninety people showed up to a virtual community forum to hear about the balanced calendar approach to using the 180 days. Port Townsend and Chimacum families, staff, and community providers had an opportunity to ask questions, express concerns, and share ideas. We are pleased with the thoughtful input, as people in our community seem to have similar concerns and hopes about using the 180 days differently.
The input phase is not over- we would love for you to take time out to fill out a brief survey, currently up on our website www.csd49.org.
While we are far from making a decision about a more balanced calendar, we are making progress on understanding our local needs and your input will be helpful.
Thank you in advance for filling out the survey!
Dr. Scott Mauk, Superintendent
