Read to Rover

Research shows that children who are learning to read feel more relaxed and less self-conscious when reading to animals. The Read to Rover program at the Chimacum Creek Primary School, aims to improve reading skills, nurture a lifelong love of reading, and help children build an enduring relationship with animals.    Initiated in the 2008-2009 school year, Read to Rover has become a highlight not only for our students but for the dog teams who anxiously await their next adventure story!  Each week, second grade students attend a 20 minute reading session with their “Forever" Read to Rover dog and handler. The joy and excitement of each reading session is palpable upon entering the primary school library.  Our numerous volunteers and their dogs who attend Read to Rover each week have been tested and certified to participate in this extraordinary experience and bring with them not only the love of a good book but also a nurturing and engaging spirit for each and every student they read with.  The relationships built throughout the school year are priceless!!

Read to Rover is a literacy program run by the Olympic Mountain Pet Pals, an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to better lives for companion animals. We actively promote spay and neuter programs to reduce overpopulation that leads to homelessness in dogs and cats.  In addition, we provide support to our senior citizens residing in Assisted Living communities through our Pets to People program.

OMPP programs are supported by donations and fundraising events. Approximately 85% of our funds go directly toward helping animals. Olympic Mountain Pet Pals is a 501(c)(3)(non-profit) organization. We happily welcome interested volunteers to any of our program offerings. http://ompetpals.org/about-us
