I grew up skipping rocks on the banks of the Willamette River just south of Portland, playing outside, and eating primarily from our beautiful garden. Lucky kid!  I was surrounded by a bevy of siblings, an extended family of foreign exchange students, deaf students (from the Portland School for the deaf) and wise, hard-working parents and grandparents.

I earned my Bachelor’s from U of O and moved to Hawaii where I studied geology and botany while working for Volcanoes National Park.  That led to a job as a fisheries biologist with the National Marine Fisheries Service and NOAA where I earned enough money to travel around the world…stopping to work in France, Greece and Norway, and ultimately back to Eugene where I did graduate work and got a Secondary teaching degree in Math and Science.

Living in the midst of mountains, beaches, farmland, forests, wetlands and rivers makes our habitat such a rich and varied outdoor classroom.  I bring my deep appreciation for the natural world into my teaching and learning, where I feel tremendously honored to support young people in finding their place as citizens and scientists on a local and planetary scale.
