Six Things You Need to Know About Chimacum Schools


Dear Chimacum School Supporter:

As the coronavirus has made life so different for us, it is more important than ever for me to update you on what is happening in your local school district.


#1 Academics go on in the continuous learning model.  Our teachers, principals, and paraeducators are reaching out to families to make learning happen.  Some teachers are using Google Classroom and some are using Zoom.  It is very important for your family to connect with the school on a regular basis.  Each school has an academic schedule, and each teacher stands by ready to help.  If you need a laptop, please make sure you send in your survey information as seen on the district website under parent survey at www.csd49.org.  Regular sleep habits and school times are essential for your child's success.

Seniors:  It is very important you touch base with Mr. Carthum, Mr. Gudger, and Ms. Fogerson this week to make sure you are on track to graduate.  All seniors will need to be engaged so that they may graduate on time. 


#2 We are exploring graduation options.  Mr. Carthum has brought together a strong committee of parents and staff who are brainstorming how to hold commencement in the safest way possible to honor the achievements of the class of 2020 and to celebrate their graduation.  We will keep you posted when a final decision is made about graduation.  Our hearts go out to the wonderful group of students who are about to celebrate a tremendous milestone.  This year the event may look different but the excitement remains as high as ever.


#3 Food service will continue through early June.  Our meal delivery program and our on-campus food options have been well received and have resulted in over 3,800 meals delivered in single week.  Thanks again to Director Margaret Garrett and to Supervisor Monica Mulligan, and our teams of drivers and paraeducators who spend time each weekday making sure our families receive the nutrition they need when regular school is not face to face.


#4 Registration is open for next school year.  If you plan to attend Chimacum Schools next year or are making a change in your child's education, please touch base with your child’s school Administrative Assistant so that they can assist you and account for accurate enrollment in the fall.  Our annual district budget for next year is due in July and it is very important for us to project the enrollment accurately.  Each child's attendance brings in the revenue we need to make sure the school district provides the best education possible.  Here are the office contacts for each school:

#5 Counseling is available.  If your student experiences stress during this uncertain times, we have folks that can help.  There are many reasons to be stressed, including economic hardship, family health issues, not being able to see friends, needing academic help and other social factors.  Please know that our staff wants to help and can provide support and resources for your family.

#6 Seeking Student Representatives for School Board.  The application period is open all month for students to apply to be on the Chimacum School Board next year.  School Board Policy 1250 describes the application process for students who will be juniors or seniors next year.  The commitment is for one year and a student must be in good academic standing.  This year interviews will be held remotely.  There are many reasons to serve on your local school board.  For applications please email traci_meacham@csd49.org.  Be sure to submit any applications by May 29.

Dear Chimacum Families:

I hope this letter finds you and your family well and healthy. I am writing to share that the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) has issued new guidelines for grading Washington State students in grades K-12.

The rules, which were drafted based on feedback from parents, students and educators from across the state, focus on the following framework for determining grades and credit:

  1. Students in grades K–8 must demonstrate effort and success in learning standards established by their teachers. Students will move on to the next grade, unless there is a mutual agreement between parents/guardians and teachers to repeat a grade or a portion of learning missed. Districts will make decisions on middle school grading practices for students not taking high school credit-bearing courses.
  2. Grades 9–12 and middle school students earning high school credits will be graded using the following principles:
    1. Do no harm.
    2. Every student will get an opportunity to improve their grade with their March 17 status as a baseline.
    3. No student will receive a “pass,” “fail,” or “no credit” grade for any course.
    4. Teachers will assign grades or assign an “incomplete” for students who cannot engage in an equitable way.
    5. Every class taken during the closure period will be given a statewide designator on the high school transcript to denote the unique environment in which the course was taken.
    6. Students assigned an “incomplete” for a course will be given opportunities to reengage and meet learning standards, in consultation with the school/student/parents/guardians, including through summer school, courses in the following term or year, independent study, competency-based courses, online courses, or back-filling the incomplete grade with the letter grade obtained in the next course taken in that subject area.
    7. All students will be given an opportunity to engage in continuous learning to maintain or improve their mastery of essential standards.

The framework issued by OSPI Superintendent Reykdal is meant to provide statewide consistency and local flexibility for districts when assessing student learning during the remainder of the school year.

Here are five (5) things you need to know from the Chimacum School District:

  1. The State Board of Education has allowed local school districts a waiver option regarding graduation requirements.  Our waiver application was sent in last week and the state board will review it on April 21.  This means that for the class of 2020, on a case by case basis, students on track to graduate will not be penalized by the school closure ordered by the Governor on February 29.  In light of this, each senior needs to stay in direct contact with their teachers and to make sure Barb Fogerson, Mark Gudger, and David Carthum have been personally contacted by each senior and their family to ensure they get a chance to waive the credits they may be eligible for.  Seniors—don’t wait—make sure the school has your contact information immediately.  For more information see www.sbe.wa.gov.
  2. Support for technology.  If you need a laptop device to support your child’s remote learning, make sure you fill out the survey on our website or contact your school directly so we can get a laptop issued to you.  We have wifi hot spots on our main campus near the commons entrance, by the tennis court parking lot, by the district office lot, and by the multipurpose room.  We are also consulting with Jefferson County PUD to install wifi in the most convenient locations for families.  The password for the guest network is CHSD.
  3. We are hearing positive stories about how families and teachers are engaging in remote learning.  Do you have a story we need to hear?  Please email it to me at rick_thompson@csd49.org.  I would love to hear how you and your family are doing and will only share the story if I have your permission.
  4. We will send you up-to-date information about learning in the remote environment as soon as we learn of it from the state.  We  have been in communication with state officials and regional superintendents to confirm best practices in this new environment.  Our teachers are taking the lead in contacting families, providing meaningful school work, and keeping students engages through packets and online learning.
  5. The School Board  Meeting scheduled for April 15 will be held remotely.  Please check our website at www.csd49.org to see how you can link in to join the meeting.  Public Comment is available during the meeting.

Message to Chimacum Families

Subject: Schools Closed for the Remainder of 2019-2020 School Year

Dear Families,

I’m writing to share some important news. Governor Inslee has made the decision to close schools for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. This closure is an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep our community safe and healthy. During this closure extension, all schools in the district will remain closed.

We understand that the continued closure of schools presents many challenges for students and families. It also raises many questions. The information outlined below is what we know now. We will continue to share further guidance as decisions are made and as information becomes available.

  • Distance Learning: Distance learning will continue in the same format through the remainder of the school year. We have created resource pages to support distance learning, and I am pleased that so many families have connected with our staff to learn how students can connect remotely through various forms of technology. You can find excellent information on our website.
  • Technology: If your child needs technology support, make sure you fill out and send the requested information found on our website under parent survey.
  • Nutrition Services: We will continue to provide meals to students who need them during weekdays after we return from Spring Break from 9-11 am at the main campus and at the primary campus.  By now, you also are aware of our delivery of food during that time period by our faithful bus drivers and paraeducators.
  • High School Seniors: High school seniors will receive support from high school staff and from Barb Fogerson.   We are working closely with the state’s college system to ensure smooth transitions.  The State Board of Education recently announced some waiver opportunities, and I encourage each Senior to take immediate steps to ensure they are on track to graduate. 
  • Graduation Ceremonies:  A final decision related to graduation ceremonies will be shared as soon as possible.
  • School Activities: All school events, including sporting practices and matches, field trips, dances, etc. will be canceled during the extended school closure. We are engaging with students to come up with creative alternatives to celebrate milestones such as prom. In some cases, special events may be postponed until summer. We will keep students and families updated on these decisions so that you can plan your participation in advance.  I know many families are coming up with creative options as well.
  • Summer School: We are awaiting information from Governor Inslee on whether school facilities will be open to provide school over the summer.

Hi Everyone!  A note about schools before Spring Break April 6-10:

Meal Pick up and Delivery:  After Spring Break our district will continue to provide meals to families at the Primary Campus, Main Campus, and by School Bus.

Will we return to school this year?  Our originally set return-to-school date is Monday, April 27, 2020.  On Thursday, April 2, Governor Inslee extended the stay-at-home order until May 4 and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction will advise Washington State schools on Monday, April 6 of how this impacts our timeline.  The District will notify families immediately if there is an extension to that date or if schools will be closed for the year.  Much of this depends on the containment of the virus.  Superintendents from across our state are meeting regularly and sharing a united concern for early notification if any new decisions are made.

What about Seniors?  Each Senior should be making progress in their studies and checking in regularly with teachers and with Barb Fogerson.  There may be some waivers granted to local school districts, but I would not expect waiver for all academic requirements.  The State Board of Education has authority over credits and waivers, and you can follow updates here:  https://www.sbe.wa.gov/news/updated-covid-19-information

With younger students spending more time on the internet, communicating with them about online safety and cyber bullying is more important than ever.
