Kim Kooistra is entering her 20th year in education as the Principal at Chimacum Junior/Senior High School. She has served as an Assistant Principal at Sammamish High School in the Bellevue School District where she worked with teams of educators to focus on developing Multi-Tiered Systems of Support for students and partnered with school teams and community members to run a hygiene drive to meet the student voiced needs of families. Prior to her work as an Assistant Principal, Kim served as a Dean of Students, Instructional Coach, English Learner and Highly Capable Learner Facilitator at Sakai Intermediate School in the Bainbridge Island School District. During that time she created a student to student mentoring program, created an articulated development of close reading strategies, and led teams focused on developing curriculum that was centered on rich concepts and provided multiple options to help all learners grow.
Over the course of her eighteen years of teaching, she taught English Language Arts at Bainbridge High School for 13 years and middle school Language Arts and Social Studies for 5 years. She has taught all levels of learners in both middle and high school in California, Virginia and Washington.
Kim has a BA in English, a MA in Humanities, and a MA in Teaching. She completed her administrative certification through the University of Washington’s Danforth program. Kim’s leadership is student centered and highlights bringing out student voice with a focus on instructional leadership. When Kim is not at school, she enjoys reading, gardening, hiking, and spending time with her family. She is excited to be joining the Chimacum community and looks forward to getting to know everyone.
